AbstractThe LegiSchool Project, a collaboration between the California State University, Sacramento, and the California State Legislature, scheduled a town-hall meeting to discuss areas in which adults feel they must control the behavior of young people. Materials for educating meeting participants are contained in this report. Participants, which included students from Northern California high schools, focused on three areas: attendance (prohibitions against truancy), association (youth being out unsupervised at night), and appearance (body piercing and tattooing). The report is divided into these three areas of concerns. Each section features a variety of background materials (legislative initiatives, news articles, and critical questions), all of which were designed to inform participants of the many issues surrounding these concerns and to stimulate discussion. Some of the questions receiving the most attention address parents' responsibility for their children's truancy, the advantages and the risks in controlling children's free time, and the issues of privacy and choice when students are trying to express themselves through their appearance.
